Managing Your Customer's Adhesive, Tape and Abrasive Stock: Bins, Scans and On-Site Programs

Part 2 of 12 · October 18, 2026

Walk into a fabrication shop, a maintenance crib or a body shop paint area and look at how adhesives, tape and abrasives are kept. Often it is a cabinet of half-used cartridges, a drawer of threadlocker bottles with no caps, open boxes of sanding discs in three grits, and a shelf of tape rolls of every width. Some products are past their shelf life. Some are on order twice because nobody could see what was there.

If you manage that stock, you stop being one of several suppliers who get a call when something runs out. You become how the customer stays stocked.

Bin labels and scanning

The app prints barcode bin labels for every crib and bin. Label the flap discs by grit and diameter, the cut-off wheels by size, the hook-and-loop discs by grit, the tape by width, the threadlockers by strength, and the cartridges and mixing nozzles together. Anyone on the floor can then scan a label with a phone and the item goes into the cart. If you or the customer do a weekly walk with a scanner gun, those scans can be uploaded in one go.

Each bin can hold a minimum and maximum. When a bin is counted, the app shows a suggested order: the max, minus what is on hand, minus what is already on order, rounded up to the pack. That matters here, where discs come in boxes of fifty or a hundred, tape comes by the case and cartridges come in cartons. Nobody ends up with an odd quantity that does not match how the product ships.

On-site programs for plants and assembly lines

A manufacturer with a main crib, line-side racks at each assembly station and maybe a vending machine for discs and gloves needs more than labels. The on-site program gives the customer one page for the plant: a dashboard where they tap any crib, vending machine or RFID rack to see its bins, a floor plan pinned with every location, what is on hand and where, and every bin with exact sizes. A new assembler can find the right adhesive for station four without asking around.

A sound program in this trade usually covers:

  • Bin labels on every location, printed from the app.
  • Min and max on line-critical items, like the structural adhesive and nozzles an assembly station cannot run without.
  • Phone counts with the suggested reorder calculated for you.
  • Receiving on a phone, checked against what was ordered.
  • A floor plan with every crib, rack and cabinet pinned, so you and the plant see the same picture.

Shelf life, special stock and paperwork

In your own warehouse, counts and receiving work on a phone and go to your system to post. Regular counts have a side benefit in adhesives: they bring old stock to the surface. When a rep counts a bin and finds cartridges that have sat too long, that is the moment to rotate them forward and set the max lower.

Shelf life is also why special stock is risky. An OEM asks you to keep a specific two-part adhesive approved on its drawing, a die-cut size of foam tape or an uncommon grit in a belt size only one of its machines uses. If the program ends, those products can age out on your shelf. Dedicated custom inventory agreements fix that. The customer signs for items stocked just for them, gets notices at six months and then at 90, 60 and 30 days, and anything left is invoiced at twelve months. You can carry what the line needs without owning all the risk.

Certs and documents sit on the lot they belong to, and customers download their own. For a manufacturer with a quality system that wants a certificate of conformance on file for each lot of adhesive, that saves an email every time.

A stock program you run is hard for a competitor to take. Once your labels are on the shelves and your counts drive the reorders, switching means starting over. Start with one customer who keeps calling about the same discs and tape in a hurry, and build the program there.
