Fastener Margin: Micro Price Increases, Below-Market Accounts and Leaks

Part 11 of 12 · October 18, 2026

Fastener pricing is unusually detailed. Prices per hundred, per thousand, per box; dozens of finishes and grades; import costs that move with freight and tariffs. Somewhere in that detail, margin quietly drains away. A price set years ago, a cost increase on a container that never reached the sell price, a big account priced well below what the national houses would charge. Each is small. Across tens of thousands of lines, they decide the year.

Micro price increases

Large increases bring calls and bid requests. Small ones mostly do not. Micro price increases in The Fastener App are small increases of half a point to two points every few months, too small to call about, that add up over two or three years.

Fasteners suit this well. Most lines are low-dollar and high-count. A tiny move on a box of lock washers is not something a buyer notices, but it adds up across every box you sell in a year.

Priced below market and margin leaks

Priced below market shows accounts priced below the large national distributors, with a suggested increase and a note to the rep. Often the most underpriced accounts are the oldest ones, set up long ago and never looked at again.

Margin leaks shows lines sold below cost or below your floor margin, and vendor cost increases that were not passed on. In fasteners, the usual leaks include:

  • Import cost increases from freight or tariffs that never reached the sell price.
  • Price-per-hundred and price-per-thousand mix-ups.
  • Specials quoted once and then repeated at the same old price.
  • Stainless and specialty finish lines priced like plain steel.
  • Contract prices that outlived the contract.

Competitor pricing intel

Competitor pricing intel shows what the large national houses give off list on public bids, plus photos and PDFs of competitor quotes and bid sheets your reps find. When a rep spots a competitor's quote on a buyer's desk, it goes into The Fastener App instead of a glovebox. Over time you learn where you are truly being undercut, and where you have been pricing lower than you needed to.

See it on one screen

The exec dashboard shows sales, margin, cash, receivables and pace on one screen, so you can watch these changes take effect. Rep commissions are live from invoices, earned and payable, which helps reps see how margin affects their own pay.

Talk to the reps before prices move. Show them the below-market list and the leaks on their accounts, and agree what to fix first. A rep who understands the reason can explain a change in one sentence. A rep who is surprised by it often gives the margin straight back.

Be careful with the most visible lines. Common sizes of hex caps, nuts and washers are the ones buyers check and competitors quote. The long tail of specials, finishes and less common sizes usually carries more room for small moves, and it is where old prices hide longest.

Fastener margin is not protected with one big move. It is a habit: find the lines that slipped, put them right, and keep selling on service and total cost so customers have little reason to shop every box. Run margin leaks on your top twenty accounts first. That list usually pays for the time spent on it.
