Lowering Your Customer's Total Cost of Fasteners, Not Just the Price per Hundred

Part 4 of 12 · October 18, 2026

Fasteners are the classic C-part. They are a small share of what a manufacturer spends, a large share of the line items it buys, and a common reason for a line to stop. That is why selling fasteners on price per hundred is usually a losing game. A competitor can always find a cheaper box of hex nuts. What they cannot always do is keep the line from running out.

Where the cost really hides

Add up what it costs a plant to buy one box of screws. A buyer finds the part, gets a price, cuts a PO. Receiving checks it in. Someone puts it away. Accounts payable matches the invoice. If the box is wrong, the whole cycle runs again, plus a return. Every one of those steps costs more than the screws.

Now add the expensive failures: a line down because a bin ran dry, an assembler using the wrong grade because the right one was missing, a quality hold because nobody could find the cert. Those are the costs that make plant managers angry.

What The Fastener App changes for the customer

  • Fewer stockouts. Min and max on every bin, with phone counts that suggest the reorder rounded to the pack.
  • Fewer POs. Blanket orders and AutoPilot reorder turn dozens of small purchases into releases on a schedule the customer controls.
  • Fewer wrong parts. Customer part numbers, real photos and cross references checked on size, thread, length, grade and finish.
  • Control over what gets used. Block an item for an account and name the one they should order instead, so nobody substitutes a grade 5 for a grade 8.
  • Paperwork on hand. Certs and C of Cs on the lot they belong to, downloaded by the customer.
  • Quality follow-through. Corrective action reports log a problem, find the root cause, fix it and get the customer's signature.

How to have the conversation

Do not walk in with made-up savings figures. Walk the floor with the plant manager or the purchasing manager and ask. How many fastener POs do you cut a month? How many suppliers? When did a line last stop for a fastener? Who chases certs when quality asks? How much time does receiving spend on small boxes?

Their own answers are the business case. When they see you can label every bin, keep them full, consolidate their purchasing and hand them the paperwork, the price of a box of 3/8 flat washers stops being the main topic.

Customers can also see their own spend, usage and category reports in The Fastener App. That gives the purchasing manager something to take to his boss: not a promise, but a record of what the program is doing.

Bring the right people into the room. The plant manager feels the line stoppages, the buyer feels the PO count, receiving feels the small boxes, quality feels the missing certs and accounts payable feels the invoices. Each of them has a reason to prefer a supplier who makes the week easier, and each can speak up for you when someone upstairs asks why you are not the cheapest.

Price still matters, especially on high-volume items. But a customer who buys on total cost signs longer agreements, adds categories, and does not send you a bid every January. That is worth far more than winning one line at a lower price per hundred.
