Battery Cable — SGT & SGX

SGT and SGX are SAE J1127 battery and starter cables. SGT has PVC insulation and SGX has cross-linked insulation for higher heat. This sheet covers the types, how to choose a size and how to make reliable terminations.

What it is

SAE J1127 covers low-voltage battery cable for road vehicles. The cable carries starter, battery and ground current, the highest currents on a vehicle. SGT has thermoplastic (PVC) insulation. SGX has cross-linked polyethylene insulation, which handles higher temperature and resists oil, fuel and abrasion better. STX is a thin-wall cross-linked version. Many shops also use flexible welding cable for battery cable where the vehicle maker allows it.

How to identify

Read the print: type (SGT, SGX, STX), AWG size, SAE J1127 and the temperature rating. Battery cable is usually black for ground and red for positive. SGX feels firmer and does not soften under heat like SGT. Welding cable has many fine strands and a rubber or similar jacket.

Check the print or maker data for the rated temperature.

Key points

  • Cable size depends on starter current, total circuit length (positive and ground together) and allowed voltage drop. Use the vehicle or starter maker's sizing guidance. Do not size by appearance.
  • Lugs must match the cable gauge, the stud size and the strand type. Fine-strand cable may need lugs made for it.
  • Use a proper crimper for the lug size, then seal the joint with adhesive-lined heat shrink.
  • Ground cables matter as much as the positive. A poor ground causes slow cranking and electrical faults.
  • Route cable away from sharp edges and exhaust, and clamp it so it does not rub.
  • Battery ratings and group sizes are covered in battery ratings CCA, CA, RC and BCI groups.

Common mistakes

  • Using a smaller gauge for a long run to a rear-mounted battery box.
  • Hammer-crimping lugs or using a lug for the wrong gauge.
  • Running SGT against hot engine parts.
  • Forgetting to replace the ground strap when replacing the positive cable.
