Primary Wire — GPT, GXL, TXL & SXL
Automotive primary wire is single-conductor low-voltage wire for vehicle circuits. GPT uses PVC insulation; GXL, TXL and SXL use cross-linked polyethylene in three wall thicknesses. This sheet explains the differences and where each is used.
Draft, open for review. Check every value against the governing standard and the manufacturer’s data before use.
What it is
SAE J1128 covers low-voltage primary cable used in road vehicles. The letters describe the insulation material and wall thickness. GPT (general purpose thermoplastic) has PVC insulation and is the common economy wire for lighting and accessories. SXL, GXL and TXL all have cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation, which handles higher temperature and resists abrasion, oil and fuel better than PVC. They differ in wall thickness: SXL is standard wall, GXL is thin wall and TXL is extra-thin wall.
How to identify
Read the print on the insulation. It shows the type letters, AWG or metric size, temperature rating and SAE J1128. XLPE wire feels firmer and does not soften or smear under a hot iron the way PVC does. TXL is visibly slimmer than SXL of the same gauge. Conductor sizes follow the primary wire gauge reference.
Type comparison
| Type | Insulation | Wall | Typical temperature rating | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GPT | PVC | Standard | 80°C (some makers list 85°C) | General lighting and accessory circuits away from heat |
| HDT | PVC | Heavy | Check print | Where extra abrasion resistance is needed |
| SXL | XLPE | Standard | 125°C | Engine compartment, heavy-duty and harsh service |
| GXL | XLPE | Thin | 125°C | Engine and chassis harnesses where space is tight |
| TXL | XLPE | Extra thin | 125°C | OEM-style harnesses, tight bundles, light weight |
Confirm the rating on the print. Some makers list a different upper limit.
Key points
- Thinner walls save space and weight but give less abrasion protection. Use loom, tape or sleeving where the wire rubs.
- XLPE types are preferred in engine compartments and near exhaust.
- Wire gauge for a circuit depends on current, length and allowed voltage drop. Use the vehicle maker's harness data or SAE sizing guidance.
- Thin-wall wire needs terminals and seals sized for its outside diameter. A weatherpack seal sized for GPT may not seal on TXL.
- Metric sizes (mm²) and AWG sizes are not exact matches. See the primary wire gauge reference.
Common mistakes
- Running GPT near exhaust or turbo heat.
- Using a seal or grommet sized for the wrong insulation thickness.
- Choosing gauge by what is on hand instead of circuit load and length.
- Splicing XLPE wire with a solder-only joint in a vibration area.
