Terms and Credit for Welding Customers: Credit Apps, Exemptions and Better Terms

Part 5 of 12 · October 18, 2026

Welding customers come in every size. A one-truck mobile welder. A ten-person fab shop. A structural steel contractor with crews on three job sites. A manufacturer with fifty welding cells. Many of them need to start buying in a hurry, because a job just landed or their old supplier let them down, and the paperwork has a way of holding up the first order.

Credit in welding supply is also trickier than it looks. Cylinder rentals, gas and hard goods all add up, and contractors are often waiting on their own customers to pay. Moving fast without being careless takes good tools.

Credit applications that come back complete

The credit application is online, and the customer signs it there. No faxing, no blank bank references, no unsigned last page. When it arrives, you approve terms with one tap.

A shop owner can fill it out on his phone between jobs, and you can decide the same day. The first order for the new job goes out while it's still the new job.

Online applications also help the customers growing out of a credit card. A mobile welder who has been paying at your counter for a year may be one clean application away from buying all his wire, rod and gas from you on terms.

Exemption certificates you can actually find

Welding distributors deal with a wide mix of tax situations. Manufacturers may buy filler metal and gases under a production exemption, depending on the state. Some customers resell. Farms, schools and government buyers may have their own exemptions. Multi-state contractors may have certificates in several places. On paper, that turns into a pile of expired and missing forms, and the distributor can end up paying the tax after an audit.

The tax exemption view shows every exempt account and whose certificate is missing or expired, so your office can ask for renewals before they lapse.

Keeping certificates current isn't just about audits. A customer who gets billed tax by mistake calls your office to sort it out, and that's a credit memo, a rebilled invoice and an unhappy buyer you could have avoided.

Offering better terms with guardrails

Terms win business. A contractor who can buy on net terms from you and has to pay cash elsewhere will send you more of his spend. The key is offering those terms without becoming the contractor's bank.

The app gives you several guardrails:

  • A complete, signed application on file before the first order on terms.
  • Master accounts that hold the terms, price file and part numbers for every location or division of a larger customer.
  • Monthly budgets and approvals, so a crew foreman can order directly without running up a balance the office never approved.
  • The collections helper, so a slow payer is visible before the balance grows.

With those in place, you can say yes to more customers, and say it sooner.

Why it pays

A welding distributor that can open an account on the day a job lands wins business slower competitors never see. One that keeps exemption certificates current keeps tax bills from eating margin. And one that extends terms with real guardrails can grow with small shops and contractors as they grow. None of it requires a bigger credit department, just paperwork that comes in complete and stays in one place.
