Filter Cross-Reference by Engine Family
A blank template for recording OEM and alternate filter numbers by engine family, with the physical and performance details that must match before an alternate is used.
Draft, open for review. Check every value against the governing standard and the manufacturer’s data before use.
What it is
A shop-maintained table of filter numbers for each engine family in the fleet: the OEM part number, the primary aftermarket number and an approved alternate. A filter maker's cross-reference says two filters fit; it does not always say they perform the same. This template adds the details that decide whether an alternate is truly equal.
How to use it
List each engine family and model year range the fleet runs. Enter the OEM filter number from the engine maker's parts catalog first. Then enter the primary and alternate numbers and confirm each detail column against the filter maker's specification sheet, not only the cross-reference lookup. Initial and date each line when it is checked.

What must match
- Thread size and gasket diameter. A filter that threads on but has a different gasket can leak or blow off.
- Efficiency rating and test method. Ratings are only comparable when they use the same test, such as ISO 4548-12 for lube filters or ISO 19438 for fuel filters.
- Bypass valve setting and anti-drainback valve, where the engine relies on them.
- Water separation for fuel filters on engines that need it.
- Length and diameter, so the filter clears nearby parts.
Key points
- Engines with high-pressure common-rail fuel systems are sensitive to fuel filter efficiency. Use the OEM-specified efficiency.
- Some engines use filters with an internal feature, such as a specific bypass or a standpipe fit. An alternate without it may fit but not work.
- Review the sheet when engines are added or OEM part numbers supersede.
Common mistakes
- Trusting a cross-reference that matches thread and size but not efficiency.
- Using a light-duty filter on a heavy-duty engine with the same thread.
- Leaving off the safety (secondary) air filter number.
Governing standards: None for the template. Engine maker's parts catalog and filter maker's specification sheets govern.
