Primary Wire Gauge Reference
SAE J1128 low-voltage primary wire types, their insulation material, wall thickness class and temperature rating, and how SAE wire sizes differ from AWG.
Draft, open for review. Check every value against the governing standard and the manufacturer’s data before use.
What it is
Primary wire is single-conductor, stranded, low-voltage wire used for vehicle lighting, accessory and control circuits. SAE J1128 sets its construction, insulation types, wall thickness and test requirements. Wire is sold by gauge (such as 16 ga) and by type (such as GXL). The type tells you the insulation material, wall thickness and temperature rating.
How to identify
The type and gauge are printed on the insulation at intervals, for example "SAE J1128 GXL 14 AWG." Cross-linked types (GXL, SXL, TXL) do not melt when touched with a soldering iron; PVC types (GPT, HDT, TWP) soften.
Wire types
| Type | Insulation | Wall | Temperature rating | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GPT | PVC | Standard | 80 °C | General circuits away from heat |
| HDT | PVC | Heavy | 80 °C | Where extra abrasion protection is needed |
| TWP | PVC (lead-free) | Thin | 105 °C | Harnesses needing smaller OD |
| SXL | Cross-linked polyethylene | Standard | 125 °C | Engine compartment, heavy-duty use |
| GXL | Cross-linked polyethylene | Thin | 125 °C | Engine compartment, harnesses |
| TXL | Cross-linked polyethylene | Extra thin | 125 °C | Tight, light harnesses |
Key points
- SAE wire is built to SAE J1128 dimensions and resistance, which can give less copper area than AWG building wire of the same gauge number. Compare the conductor area or resistance, not just the gauge.
- Thinner walls give a smaller, lighter harness but less abrasion resistance. Protect thin-wall wire with loom or sleeving.
- Cross-linked types are the usual choice under the hood and near exhaust or engine heat.
- Circuit sizing depends on current, length, voltage drop and the fuse; follow the OEM or body builder's wiring guidance.
- Battery and starter cable is a different product (SAE J1127), not primary wire.
Common mistakes
- Using PVC (GPT) wire near the exhaust or turbo, where it softens and shorts.
- Replacing a gauge in a harness with "the same number" of a different wire standard.
- Using solid-core household wire in a vehicle, which cracks from vibration.
- Leaving wire unsupported so it chafes through on a frame edge.
Governing standards: SAE J1128 (low-voltage primary cable); SAE J1127 (low-voltage battery cable). OEM and body-builder wiring guidelines.
