Earplug Fit and Insertion
How to insert foam, pre-molded and push-in earplugs correctly using the roll-pull-hold method, how to check the seal, and how individual fit testing systems confirm protection.
Draft, open for review. Check every value against the governing standard and the manufacturer’s data before use.
What it is
Earplugs only work when they seal deep in the ear canal. Poor insertion is the main reason real-world protection falls far below the label NRR. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95(k) requires training on the use, fitting and care of hearing protectors. ANSI S12.71 covers field systems that measure how much attenuation a person actually gets, called a Personal Attenuation Rating (PAR).
How to insert (roll-pull-hold for foam plugs)
- Roll. With clean hands, roll the plug into a thin, crease-free cylinder.
- Pull. Reach over the head with the opposite hand and pull the top of the ear up and back. This straightens the canal.
- Insert. Slide the rolled plug well into the canal.
- Hold. Hold it in place with a fingertip while it expands, about 20 to 30 seconds.
- Check. Little of the plug should show from the front. The wearer's own voice should sound louder and muffled.
Plug types and insertion
| Plug type | Insertion | Fit tell |
|---|---|---|
| Roll-down foam | Roll, pull, insert, hold | Most of the plug is inside the canal; no creases |
| Pre-molded (flanged) | Pull ear, push in by the stem with a slight twist | Flanges seal without pain; comes in sizes |
| Push-in foam (with stem) | Pull ear, push stem until foam is in the canal | Foam tip fully in canal |
| Banded (canal caps) | Place pods at the canal opening and press | Band under chin or behind head; light seal only |
| Custom molded | Twist into place per the maker | Should feel snug with no gaps |
Fit check
- Cup both hands over the ears, then release. With a good seal, the change in sound is small.
- If noise sounds much louder when the hands come off, reinsert.
- Fit testing systems under ANSI S12.71 play test tones or use microphones to give a PAR for each ear. Use them for training, new hires and workers with threshold shifts.
Key points
- Pre-molded plugs come in sizes. One size does not fit all canals.
- Reuse plugs only as the maker allows. Dirty foam loses its shape and can irritate the ear.
- Insert before entering noise, not after.
Common mistakes
- Pushing a foam plug in without rolling it.
- Inserting only the tip and leaving most of the plug outside.
- Rolling plugs with dirty hands.
- Assuming the label NRR applies to every wearer.
