How to Measure Hands for Glove Size
A step-by-step method for measuring hand circumference and hand length the way EN ISO 21420 defines them, and how to turn the numbers into a glove size.
Draft, open for review. Check every value against the governing standard and the manufacturer’s data before use.
What it is
Protective glove sizes under EN ISO 21420 are based on two hand measurements: circumference around the palm and length from wrist to fingertip. A correct measurement takes under a minute with a flexible tape. It is the best way to cut returns and keep workers in gloves that grip well and stay on.
How to measure
- Use a soft cloth or vinyl tape measure. A paper strip and a ruler also work.
- Measure the dominant hand. It is usually slightly larger.
- Circumference: hold the hand flat, fingers together, thumb out to the side. Wrap the tape around the palm just below the knuckles, not including the thumb. Keep it snug, not tight.
- Length: with the hand flat and palm up, measure from the crease where the wrist meets the palm to the tip of the middle finger.
- Write both numbers down in millimeters (or inches).
- Look up the size by circumference first, then check length.
Measurement to size
| Glove size | Circumference (mm) | Length (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 152 | 160 |
| 7 | 178 | 171 |
| 8 | 203 | 182 |
| 9 | 229 | 192 |
| 10 | 254 | 204 |
| 11 | 279 | 215 |
Values are the reference hand sizes in EN ISO 21420. Between two sizes, try both on.
Key points
- The size number roughly equals hand circumference in inches.
- If circumference and length point to different sizes, length usually decides comfort at the fingertips; circumference decides fit across the palm. Try the glove on.
- Size up one when wearing a liner or a thermal glove under a shell.
- Gloves for fine work (assembly, inspection) should fit close. Gloves for heavy handling can be slightly looser.
- A large gap at the fingertips leads to snagging and lost feel.
Common mistakes
- Measuring the thumb in with the palm.
- Measuring across the knuckles with a fist made.
- Using the non-dominant hand.
- Sizing a whole crew from one person's hand.
- Skipping a try-on for chemical gloves, which have little stretch.
